Northern Norway offers some of Europe’s most extraordinary and varied landscapes — dramatic mountains, glaciers, sculpted rock formations, alpine plateaus, rivers, fjords and a rugged Arctic coastline.

During this seven-day landscape photography workshop, we explore a carefully selected route through Nordland, visiting locations including Marmorslottet, Upper Saltdal, Gildeskål, Láhko National Park and Svartisen/Engenbreen.

These are landscapes I know particularly well. Having grown up in Northern Norway and photographed extensively throughout Nordland for many years, I have a close relationship with the region, its changing weather and light, and many of the locations we will visit.

The workshop is designed around photography rather than a fixed sightseeing itinerary. We adjust our days according to weather, light and conditions, giving us the flexibility to be at the most rewarding locations when they are at their best.

Throughout the week you’ll receive personal, hands-on guidance in the field. With two instructors and a maximum of twelve participants, there will be no more than six participants per instructor.

Our role is not simply to take you to beautiful places and then concentrate on our own photography. We work closely with you while you are photographing — discussing composition, visual structure, exposure, camera technique and how to respond creatively to the landscape in front of you.

The goal is that you return home not only with memorable experiences from Northern Norway, but with stronger photographs, greater confidence and a more deliberate approach to landscape photography.

Creating strong landscape compositions with depth, balance and clear visual structure
Working with changing Northern Norwegian light and weather
Reading a landscape and identifying photographic possibilities
Developing compositions before setting up the camera
Working with foreground, layers, scale and spatial relationships
Photographing both expansive landscapes and quieter details, textures and patterns
Using shutter speed creatively with rivers, waterfalls, sea and clouds
Working with filters and long exposures when conditions are suitable
Improving exposure, focusing and tripod technique
Selecting and evaluating images through structured image-review sessions
Developing a more coherent and personal body of landscape photographs

THE LANDSCAPES

One of the strengths of this workshop is the extraordinary variety of landscapes we encounter during a single week.

At Marmorslottet, the river has carved remarkable shapes, channels and flowing lines into the marble over thousands of years, creating opportunities for both intimate compositions and wider landscape photographs.

In Gildeskål, mountains meet the Norwegian Sea in a coastal landscape of beaches, rocky shorelines, islands and constantly changing weather.

Láhko National Park is very different again. Its extensive alpine karst landscape is characterised by pale limestone, lakes, mountains and unusual geological formations, offering both large-scale vistas and minimalist compositions.

At Svartisen and Engenbreen, ice, mountains, water and glacial landscapes provide another completely different photographic environment. We will work with everything from the scale of the glacier within the surrounding landscape to details, patterns, reflections and flowing water.

The route also takes us through Saltdal and other selected locations in Nordland, allowing us to respond to conditions and photograph places that are still well outside the most heavily photographed routes in Northern Norway.

Single-room accommodation, breakfast and transportation during the workshop are included in the workshop price. The workshop also includes structured image reviews and two online follow-up sessions after the workshop.

The workshop is suitable for photographers with different levels of experience. You do not need to be an advanced photographer, but you should be familiar with the basic operation of your own camera.

INSTRUCTORS

The workshop is led by Terje Svendsen and Bjørn Joachimsen.

With two instructors working with a small group, we can spend considerably more time with each participant in the field. Individual guidance is a central part of the workshop, whether you need assistance with technical decisions or want to work more deeply with composition, visual expression and the development of your own photographic approach.
