Workshop by Rune Eraker, Otto von Münchow & Bjørn Joachimsen

Do you want to learn more about how to engage people, show city life and urban landscapes through photographs? We offer this workshop to inspire you and share our insights, experience and techniques within street portraiture, documentary and cityscape photography.

Our aim is to give your confidence a boost and to inspire you when working in urban contexts. During this four day workshop we will give lectures, walk around together with you, give individual tuition – and give image critique from the material you create.

This fascinating, insightful photography event will take place in Oslo on September 1st–4th 2022.

Approach

The workshop targets photographers that are passionate about people and the environment in which they live, work and shop and what might occur on a day to day basis, but the approaches and the way we work may deviate from what is usually thought of as “street photography”. We will definitely photograph in the streets of Oslo, but we are not the typical candid photographers who spy on people with our cameras and long lenses.

You can use any camera you like during the workshop, digital or analog. You will learn how to prepare, observe, see, think, move and decide which shot to take when photographing in the streets, whether that be people or the urban landscape. So you do not need to click hundreds of images during a work session. We will inspire and guide you to shoot images with a more conscious attitude, taking time to think about what you want to achieve with your image, but at the same time being more decisive about what you want to say – because we believe this will make you a better photographer – and make your photographs more interesting.

Street work and image critique

We start with lectures on Thursday afternoon. Otto, Rune and Bjørn will present images and share some thoughts. On Friday morning we go to explore and see what is going on in this wonderful city of Oslo. We are together with you all day and offer advice whenever you need it. Next morning we’ll give a constructive critique to help you improve and discuss any obstacles that might have occured. After the image critique session we are ready for another long day out on the streets with our cameras. Sunday morning we will give even more image critique but we will go deeper and comment on more images than Saturday morning´s critique session. We will also offer printing of images created during the workshop.

During the workshop we will also offer individual image critique.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Rune Eraker.

Rune Eraker

For more than 30 years Rune has worked as an independent documentary photographer.

He has had a number of solo-exhibitions in museums (such as Stenersenmuseet 2001, Trondheim Museum of Fine Art 2006 and The Nobel Peace Center 2009/2018, and has published widely in magazines and newspapers, both in Norway and internationally. He has also published a number of photo-books (such as “Øyeblikk av Lys” Aschehoug 2001, “The Smell of Longing” Wigestrand, 2005, and “The Dream of Europe” Forlaget Press, 2009).

Currently he is heading the editorial team of Norwegian Journal of Photography, and he was one of four curators at European Photo Exhibition Award (EPEA). In 2014 The Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow (MOCAK) exhibited Erakers solo-exhibition “Uprooted”.

In 2018 his book “Tell the world about us” was published by Forlaget Press. The book is about lost liberty and human dignity. Eraker has met people who have been forced into exile, like Edward Snowden and the Dalai Lama; women in Latin America, who have been jailed for murder after suffering a miscarriage or still-birth; members of the LGBT community in Russia, who must hide their true selves; and young girls in Nairobi who have been raped and brutally assaulted. All these people have been robbed of their liberty but are still fighting to maintain their dignity and integrity.

Rune will give lectures and image critique during the workshop.

Otto von Münchow.

Otto von Münchow

Otto is a Norwegian based photographer, who has been working for national and international press for more than three decades.

His work is rooted in the documentary and photojournalistic tradition. Still, he constantly seeks to expand his vision, both visually and technically. For Otto, passion and transcending the passion into personal photographs that move the viewer, is essential to his work, whether it’s documentary work on assignment or personal photo projects. Photographing on the street is for him photography come alive. He loves photographing situations in which a lot is going on and then create some kind of order out of the chaos.

Otto´s photos have been published in magazines in Norway and worldwide. He loves to teach photography and particularly workshops dealing with creativity and expansion of one’s creative approach.

Otto will give lectures, demonstrations and guidance in the streets and image critique during the workshop.

To me, photography is all about connecting. Connecting to your emotions. Connecting to the people you photograph. Connecting to something beyond yourself. And then finally, connecting with your audience through your photos.
— Otto von Münchow

Bjørn Joachimsen.

Bjørn Joachimsen

Bjørn is totally devoted to photography and works with commercial assignments, workshops and his personal projects in many photographic genres.

He usually photographs landscapes and urban environments with his 8x10 Gibellini Camera and Ilford films. Sometimes he picks up his medium format or 35mm cameras as well.

One day you can find him in the mountains or fjords in Norway, the next day you can find him in Berlin, Split, Las Palmas or Oslo. He works both with analog and digital techniques and mixes them a lot. Bjørn spends a lot of his time sharing his knowledge and inspiration within photography through workshops in Norway and elsewhere.

Bjørn is curious about the world we live in and spends a lot of time exploring near and far surroundings with his cameras. He has published photographs from Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Austria, Spain and Svalbard.

Bjørn will give lectures, demonstrations and guidance in the streets and image critique during the workshop.

I usually try to find a visually interesting scene in a cityscape – where I suspect something interesting is going to happen. I find the standpoint that can give me the best composition and put my camera on a tripod...then I wait.. and drink the best coffee I can get.
