390.00

Workshop by Keith Moss (UK) and Bjørn Joachimsen (NOR).

Do you want to learn more about how to engage people, show city life and urban landscapes through photographs? We offer this workshop to inspire you and share our insights, experience and techniques within street portraiture and cityscape photography – and our aim is to give your confidence a boost and to inspire you when working in urban contexts. During this three day workshop we will give lectures, walk around together with you, give individual tuition – and give image critique from the material you create. This fascinating, insightful photography event will take place in Oslo on May 23rd–26th 2019.

Photographers – amateurs and professionals alike – are invited to join this analog photography experience in Oslo. We will work hard from early morning until late in the evening to help you improve your photographic vision and skills. We are proud to facilitate a workshop that is sponsored by Ilford Photo – a major player within analog photography since 1879. The workshop is also sponsored by Lotus View Camera, Austria– known for their craft built cherrywood cameras.

Approaches

The workshop targets photographers that are passionate about people and the environment in which they live, work and shop and what might occur on a day to day basis, but the approaches and the way we work may deviate from what is usually thought of as “street photography”. We will definitely photograph in the streets of Oslo, but, we are not the typical candid photographers who spy on people with our cameras and long lenses. Keith is very fond of street portrait photography, he has a unique skill in connecting to and communicating with people he meets on the streets often getting up close and personal, so this will be a key component in this workshop.

Humans are creatures of habit, you can often predict what is going to happen next so being prepared is so important. You have to be decisive and react quickly.

Bjørn´s approach is to emphasize the relation between the urban landscape and its inhabitants. He does not always go very close (but sometimes, yes) – he always tries to include buildings and infrastructure in his photographs – and all  human life, the light and the shadows that unfolds in between. During the workshop he will perform at least one session where he works with his 8x10” Lotus (large format) camera.

I usually try to find a visually interesting scene in a cityscape – where I suspect something interesting is going to happen. I find the standpoint that can give me the best composition and put my camera on a tripod...then I wait.. and drink the best coffee I can get.

You can use any camera you like during the workshop, as long as you can put film in it. You will learn how to prepare, observe, see, think, move and decide which shot to take when photographing in the streets, whether that be people or the urban landscape. So you don´t need to click hundreds of images during a work session. Shooting with film is a more thoughtful process, we rarely put more than one roll of film through our cameras. We will inspire and guide you to shoot images with a more conscious attitude, taking time to think about what you want to achieve with your image but at the same time being more decisive about what you want to say because we believe this will make you a better photographer – and make your photographs more interesting.

Street work

On Friday morning we will give you one roll of Ilford XP-2 film. Load your camera (or let us help you if you need) – and off we go to explore and see what is going on in this wonderful city of Oslo. In the afternoon we will meet up at Oslo Foto to drop off our exposed rolls of precious films to the film loving people at Oslo Foto. They will process your valuable exposures into beautiful negatives, they’ll also scan them so you can see your photographic results on the Saturday morning. We’ll then give a constructive critique to help you improve and discuss any obstacles that might have occured. One more roll, and out on the streets again! Sunday morning we will give even more image critique but we will go deeper and comment on more images than Saturday morning´s critique session.
